Grammys So Male? 'Women Need to Step Up,' Says Recording Academy President

Jay-Z performs on the 4:44 Tour at Barclays Center in New York. The rapper was nominated for eight Grammy nominations on Tuesday Nov. 28. Four of the five album of the year nominees at the 2018 Grammys are rap and R&B-ba Grammys So Male? 'Women Need to Step Up,' Says Recording Academy President

[They need] to step up because I think they would be welcome. And, yet, women were not awarded or celebrated for their contributions proportion to that last night, just as they are not paid or promoted within all industries in proportion to their work and worth. "There's no way we can really deal with everybody". "It's not just going on in Hollywood, it's not just going on in Washington - it's right here in our industry as well".

Album of the Year nominee Lorde, 21, wore a stunning red Valentino gown at the 2018 Grammys, held live from New York City on January 28.

And when asked if it was a mistake to leave out of the show, executive producer Ken Ehrlich said: "I don't know if it was a mistake".

"We have a wealth of riches every year, and it's hard to have a balanced show and have everybody involved. We can't have a performance from every nominee - we have over 80 categories - so we have to realize that we have to create something that has balance". These shows are a matter of choices. The musician made a significant comeback last year, following years locked in various legal battles with producer Dr Luke, who she accuses of rape. "Overall, we did the best we can to make sure it's representative of our show".

One Twitter user suggested that, next year, women "get nominated for all the 2019 Grammys" and then protest the previous exclusion by sitting out the show entirely.

A source told the publication that she turned down the offer to take part in a joint performance of the late singer's hit "American Girl". And Kesha's triumphant performance of "Praying" brought viewers (and the audience) to tears.

SZA, the breakout R&B star nominated for five awards, was also shut out completely.

"It's not for me to talk about", Erlich responded. Later, Janelle Monae introduced Kesha with a firm "Time's Up" warning for the music industry: "We come in peace, but we mean business". She continued, "To those who would dare silence us, we offer you two words: Time's up". "And equality is something we have to address on a lot of levels".

Meanwhile, Lorde's camp hasn't publicly discussed her snub or decision not to perform.

"It wasn't her year".

"This says it all", Yelich wrote.
