Just another day at the office for Zuma

Cyril Ramaphosa sympathised with the "anxiety and concern" felt by many South Africans at the turmoil that has engulfed the leadership of the ruling African National Congress (ANC).

The sources said the meeting in Cape Town is between the head of state and Cabinet subcommittees, following the Cabinet lekgotla at which government plans were laid out.

National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete said on Wednesday morning that Ramaphosa would relay details of Zuma's fate later in the day.

The announcement that the ANC's national executive, which has the power to recall Mr Zuma, would not meet as scheduled on Wednesday followed the dramatic cancellation of a key parliament speech by the president.

As a result, many in the ANC fear his presidency has become toxic - and is hurting the party's standing.

The presidency said later that Zuma would also be on duty at the annual Ubuntu Awards at the Cape Town International Convention Centre‚ which this year honours former president Nelson Mandela and celebrates South Africans who "play an active role in projecting a positive image of South Africa internationally".

Clearly unaware that the NEC meeting was about to be called off‚ Mashatile told his audience that they would go to the powerful gathering to remove Zuma after he had declined to resign when the party's top six met on Sunday evening.

"We will be able to communicate further on President Zuma's position as President of the Republic once we have finalised all pertinent matters", Ramaphosa added.

News that Zuma's State of the Nation Address has been postponed at the 11th hour, has fueled speculation that his departure may be imminent.

In previous years, opposition lawmakers have shouted Mr Zuma down and been ejected from parliament by security guards in chaotic scenes. Ramaphosa has talked of a transition of power since he took over as leader of the ANC.

Opposition parties are preparing to pile on the pressure in a bid to bring forward the date of the Economic Freedom Fighters' (EFF) motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma. Zuma's office described a social media report that Russian President Vladimir Putin was going to visit the country this week as "fake" news. Mr Ramaphosa has associated himself with an anti-corruption drive.
