Labour party: Brexit 'crunch time is coming'

Shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer announced the significant shift which signals clear distance between the government and opposition on Brexit.

Sir Keir said Labour had conducted "many weeks of discussion unanimously" and had agreed to develop their policy.

A customs union would allow free trade among members (i.e. the United Kingdom and the EU), and a common external tariff on trade with non-members (i.e. the rest of the world).

"And, if we want to build a modern, low-carbon economy that protects workers and tackles tax avoidance, we will only achieve it through collaboration and frictionless trade with our nearest neighbours. Yes, that's the intention".

Are these Tories really prepared to risk Prime Minister Corbyn or a general election with their party in total disarray for the sake of "a customs union" with the EU?

More than 80 senior Labour figures have fired off a warning to Jeremy Corbyn that leaving the European Union single market could scupper his efforts to ease austerity. The letter claims the party's manifesto promises on spending would be hit if Britain left the bloc's single market.

"Britain will need a bespoke relationship of its own", Corbyn will say in a speech, according to excerpts released to journalists ahead of time.

Stating it is "increasingly" likely there won't be a majority of MPs in favour of adopting "any particular type of Brexit", Mr Blair said: "At that point, the sensible thing - since this whole Brexit business originated from the referendum in June 2016 - is to say it's got to go back to the people to decide".

He said: "neither of those are going to be got rid off easily, I don't there is the wish in their political parties for that and I certainly don't think the Tory side will want Anna Soubry, whatever her abilities are, to bring her Prime Minister down".

The Labour leader added that leaving the European Union "does not inevitably spell doom for our country".

"There will be some who will tell you that Brexit is a disaster for this country and some who will tell you that Brexit will create a land of milk and honey".

"We haven't made a final decision on that".

The headlines for Jeremy Corbyn's speech on Monday are about his U.K. Labour Party's Brexit policy.

But signatories to the statement want more and are calling on Mr Corbyn to back Britain's continued membership of the single market as well.

"Evidence strongly suggests that a comprehensive customs union, alongside a deep relationship with the single market, is best for jobs, investment and living standards", wrote Carolyn Fairbairn, the head of the Confederation of British Industry, in Sunday's Observer newspaper.

It follows that the government must work to try and ease concerns across the party over its Brexit position.

"And it certainly can't be trusted with the NHS post-Brexit either".

"Theresa May has ruled this out - the vast majority of those who voted for us a year ago did so in the belief that we would do all we can to oppose this".

"Labour stands for a completely different future".
