Iran slams Britain for 'dishonest' behavior at UN

A United Nations resolution condemning Iran for violating an arms sanction against Yemen was vetoed by Russian Federation.

Earlier in the month, Britain circulated a draft resolution that would renew sanctions on Yemen for another year and also "condemns" Iran for allegedly breaching the 2015 arms embargo on the country by "failing to take the necessary measures to prevent the direct or indirect supply, sale or transfer" of short-range ballistic missiles, UAVs and other military equipment to Yemen's Houthi Ansarullah movement.

Russian Federation was joined by Bolivia in opposing the resolution, while China and Kazakhstan abstained from voting.

The latest British draft dropped the condemnation and instead expressed concern that United Nations experts monitoring the sanctions reported Iran had violated a targeted arms embargo by failing to stop missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles reaching the Houthis.

Nebenzia noted that Russian Federation wished no misunderstanding on the matter and it fully endorses the majority of the provisions set forth in the resolution, but "cannot concur with uncorroborated conclusions and evidence which requires verification and discussions within the Sanctions Committee".

The U.S. has been lobbying for months for Iran to be held accountable at the United Nations for violating an arms embargo on Houthi leaders.

UNITED NATIONS/TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) - The United States threatened unilateral action against Iran on Monday after Russian Federation vetoed a western bid for the United Nations Security Council to call out Tehran for failing to prevent its weapons from falling into the hands of Yemen's Houthi group.

After the UNSC failed to pass the UK-drafted resolution, Russian Federation proposed its own draft later on Monday, which was subsequently and unequivocally adopted by the UNSC.

Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, did not acknowledge the findings of the investigative case and said the guilt of Iran was unproven.

According to the report, a missile fired into Saudi Arabia in 2017 by the Huthis was made in Iran, though it was unable to definitively identify the supplier.

More than 10,000 people have died in fighting in Yemen that began as a domestic conflict after Houthi rebels took control of the capital Sanaa.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump a year ago agreed to sell the Saudis more than $100 billion in weapons, despite concerns among some members of Congress about the toll on Yemeni civilians from the Saudis' bombing campaign.

It also said it was investigating reports that Iranian advisers are working with Houthi forces to fight the Saudi-led coalition. The embargo was due to expire at midnight on February 26.

Haley has taken a hawkish stance on Iran, accusing Tehran of sowing instability in the Middle East and failing to live up to its commitments under the landmark 2015 nuclear deal.

Iran, along leading worldwide human rights organizations, has called for an immediate end to the sales of arms by Washington, London and other Europeans to Saudi Arabia and other aggressors, who are killing innocent Yemeni people on a daily basis.

The approved resolution made no mention of Iran.
