'Creepy' and 'Evil': Amazon's Alexa Is Laughing at Users

Reports of the issue on social media date back as far as February 22. In an attached video, listeners can clearly hear Alexa's laugh come out of a JBL Bluetooth speaker paired to an Amazon Echo Dot. This is not an isolated issue either - multiple people are having their hearts tested with Alexa's creepy, unpredictable laughter. That outage occurred well after the first recorded incident acknowledging Alexa's apparent laughing problem.

No, you're (probably) not being haunted, it's just Amazon's Alexa voice assistant malfunctioning in a profoundly creepy way.

"I will call "Alexa" and the light turns on and goes off immediately after, giving me no time to say anything". "The laugh wasn't in the Alexa voice".

If it's possible to describe laughter, this one sounds slightly sarcastic, as if the person laughing was trying to convey that they didn't really find whatever they'd just heard amusing. Others have claimed Alexa has stopped responding to requests. My wife was there when it happened and she is the only person who can drop-in.

"There's a good chance I get murdered tonight".

Some Alexa users have reported hearing an unprompted laugh from their smart speaker devices in the last day.

In the meantime, Alexa users will just have to deal with Alexa's random fits of laughter.

And if you're home alone, that would be unnerving as all heck.

NBC News reports the laughter, sometimes heard as a childlike cackle, is happening at inappropriate times.
