The website said 9,587 flights had been delayed and 3,076 canceled, a lot of them in the north-east, by late afternoon.

More snow and fierce wind gusts of up to 55 miles per hour (88 km/h) were expected from eastern NY through northern ME on Thursday after the storm slammed the region on Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

By late Wednesday afternoon, parts of northern New Jersey and CT and NY had recorded than 11 inches of snow, the National Weather Service reported. Snow clouds on Wednesday were throwing out the snow at up to three inches an hour.

Over 3,000 flights were canceled on Wednesday and more than 350,000 customers, including at least 154,000 in NY alone, were left without power as the brutal storm unleashed heavy snow, rain and gusty winds across on the area.

Parts of NY and New England will continue to see snowfall at rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour into the overnight hours, forecasters said.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker urged residents to use caution and stay off the roads during the height of the storm.

Wind gusts up to 60 mph were forecast on Cape Cod, 45 mph at the Jersey shore and 30 mph around suburban Philadelphia.

Parts of northern New England faced another 18 inches of snow or more before the storm finally moves out Friday.

The storm is expected to drop more than a foot of snow in interior locations throughout the day, especially in locations from northern New Jersey, the lower Hudson River Valley and into northern CT and western MA, according to Fox News Senior Meteorologist Janice Dean. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf announced a state of emergency for several counties. Philadelphia International Airport recorded about 6 inches, while New York City's Central Park saw less than 3 inches.

Much of ME awoke to an intense whiteout Thursday, as a massive blizzard pummeled the state with what is expected to amount to a foot of snow in most places. While snow continued to fall there overnight Thursday, it should be "completely out of the region" by morning, according to the weather service.

"As it moves, snow will occur north and west of the low".

Warmer temperatures near the ground didn't help, either, said Faye Morrone, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton, New York. Known as "thundersnow", it's snow paired with lightning and resulting thunder.

Amtrak resumed passenger train services between New York City and Boston on a modified schedule after they were suspended for hours earlier on Thursday.

Mayor Marty Walsh reminded residents to take their time shoveling as the snow is heavy and to help elderly or disabled neighbors if possible.
