"This in an active and fluid situation", California Highway Patrol Sergeant Robert Nacke told reporters in Yountville, though he declined to provide any further information about the situation inside the home.

Napa County Fire captain Chase Beckman said earlier that the gunman took at least three people hostage.

The sheriff's office reported that a shot had been fired, but there were no immediate reports of any casualties.

Founded in 1884, the facility houses about 1,000 aging vets and is the largest veterans home in the United States, according to the CalVet.

"We have activated our emergency response protocol and are cooperating with law enforcement", the department said in a Facebook post.

The home is located across the street from the Napa Valley Museum in Yountville on California Drive. About 1,000 veterans from conflicts spanning from World War II to Operation Enduring Freedom are said to call the facility home.
