The officials said that one of the long-term storage tank that contained liquid nitrogen had an equipment failure that caused the temperatures to rise temporarily.
Patti DePompei, president of UH MacDonald Women'sHospital and UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, told NBC News this malfunction may have caused damage to numerous eggs and embryos - some of which have been stored for decades.
"Some of the eggs and embryos that were stored date back decades", DePompei told WKYC.
"We don't know the reasons why yet", DePompei said. "In any case, we do realize that the temperature that was estimated at a bit of the tank was higher than our adequate cutoff points". The hospital hasn't said whether it would compensate about 700 affected patients, who are being notified through letters and telephone calls.
Approximately 500 to 600 families were affected by the malfunction and University Hospitals have begun the tedious task of reaching out to all the families to see how they wish to proceed. University Hospitals says it won't destroy the eggs and embryos, though whether patients will get their money back isn't yet clear.
No one was at the facility overnight on Saturday, and the storage tank was monitored both on and off-site.
At the tissue storage bank, these eggs and embryos are stored in liquid nitrogen according to a hospital spokesperson's statement yesterday (8th of March 2018). "Right now, our patients and families are our first priority".
The facility has set up a call center for patients to arrange and appointment or calls to speak with their physicians. It has also moved the eggs and embryos to a working tank. However, the only way to know if an embryo is still viable is to thaw and implant it.
Egg freezing has grown in popularity, with more than 6,2000 women going through the procedure in 2015, according to the AmericanSociety for Reproductive Medicine.
The potential damage to hundreds or thousands of eggs would be a devastating financial and emotional blow to the respective patients, which include women donating their eggs, women hoping to delay a pregnancy or women storing extra embryos while they undergo in vitro fertilization.
