The world may never know who won a $560 million Powerball jackpot, according to a court ruling issued Monday in favor of the woman's request to remain anonymous.
Judge Charles Temple ruled that disclosing the woman's name would be an invasion of privacy and allowed her to be exempt from a state law which requires the release of a winner's name and hometown.
The woman who bought the winning ticket in January had gone to court to keep her name from being made public.
The winner's privacy interest in the nondisclosure of her name outweighs the public's interest in the disclosure of her name, the judge concluded.
A New Hampshire assistant attorney general also recently argued that it's in the public interest to disclose the woman's identity, saying "The lottery thrives on transparency", according to The Union Leader.
Temple found there was "no evidence" the New Hampshire State Lottery Commission was engaged in fraudulent activity, noting the drawing takes place in Florida.
The commission already allows winners to sign their tickets with the name of a trust instead of the individual's name, the judge noted, in essence allowing winners to be anonymous.
The court says the state will only identify the new millionaire's hometown.
Attorney Steven M. Gordon, who represented lottery victor "Jane Doe", holds up an annual report from the New Hampshire Lottery during a hearing in the Jane Doe v. NH Lottery Commission case at Hillsborough Superior Court in Nashua, N.H., Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018.
Her attorneys released a statement on Monday saying the victor lives in Merrimack.
"She was jumping up and down", Shaheen said.
Judge Temple wrote in his ruling that he had "no doubts whatsoever that should Ms Doe's identity be revealed, she will be subject to an alarming amount of harassment, solicitation, and other unwanted communications". The woman ended up establishing the Good Karma Family Trust of 2018.
Still, Temple ruled that the victor has no privacy interest in keeping the community wherein she resides secret, which the judge ruled could be disclosed pursuant to a Right-to-Know request.
She had already received her after-tax winnings of US$264 million while the judge mulled her claim to privacy. The first thing he did was give a total of about $249,000 to a couple of nonprofits - Girls Inc. and three chapters of End 68 Hours of Hunger - and said the woman plans to give away as much as $50 million in the future.
