TechCrunch notes developers behind Google Maps and other mapping apps are still figuring out how to incorporate street info that could be highly valuable to people with disabilities, including sidewalk conditions and grade, curb cuts and pedestrian crossing zones.
The feature comes at a time when many transit authorities are receiving criticism for not creating better options for disabled people who rely on public transportation.
The service is purely aimed at major metropolitan areas (such as Sydney) and their transit routes such as buses, trains, light rail (trams) and ferries.
The company said today in a blog post that getting around in the city for people with mobility needs is no easy feat, so it has introduced the feature to help people find routes and stations that are wheelchair-friendly. Having a map of these routes can make it easier for the wheelchair users to map out their route before they leave home.
To use the feature, tap "Directions" and then select the public transport icon.
Google will add wheelchair accessible routes to Google Maps.
In cities such as San Francisco or NY, you can find information online on how wheelchair-accessible the streets and stations are, although it's not exactly easy to navigate those sites.
A statement from Google said: 'When you select this option, Google Maps will show you a list of possible routes that take mobility needs into consideration'. Google said it's working with more transit agencies, so the feature could expand into more cities.
And in the case of helping people seeking wheelchair access for transit travel, it appears the Local Guides program is doing some meaningful work. Registered Local Guides can also add information to Google Maps about accessibility.
