Irish law, from 1903 to 1970, declared St. Patrick's Day a religious observance for the entire country meaning that all pubs were shut down for the day.

The day on which St. Patrick died became an official feast day in the Catholic Church in 1631. Legend says his real name was Maewyn Succat, but he later changed it to Patricius (or Patrick), which derives from the Latin term for father figure.

And St. Patrick's Day actually was popularized here in America, as much as it has been in Ireland. Because it was expected that we'd be fasting and abstaining from alcohol during Lent, and traditionally we'd be granted a dispensation so we could celebrate and toast the great St. Patrick.

March 17, 2011 - The 250th New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade is held.

St Patrick is the patron Saint of Ireland and the 17 March marks the traditional day of celebration. He escaped captivity, made his way to France, joined the Church and returned to Ireland where he spent the rest of his days.

"It's time to wake up", he told Ireland's RTÉ News.

Every year, millions across the nation gather to celebrate the worst of Irish stereotypes in honor of a man famous for killing them.

And Oklahoma can lay claim to a substantial Irish population, with fully 16 counties in this state having more than a 10 percent makeup of people claiming Irish heritage. It coincides with his death on 17 March in the fifth century. Certainly, it's known that - unlike his predecessors - Patrick was an evangelizer and actively opposed the Irish-Pagans; whether or not he was actually responsible for "enlightening" the Irish is rather more hard to determine.

St. Patrick's Day is a time-honored tradition across much of the developed world - the one day of the year when drinking to excess is nearly written into law.

September 4, 2014 - The organizers of the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade announce the first ever LGBT group to march in 2015 under their banner.

It was on that 1762 day that Irish soldiers serving in the British Army chose to parade in New York City to celebrate their singular heritage.

That story, like many in history, was an allegory for St. Patrick eradicating pagan ideology and substituting Christianity for the Irish people.
