Members of Ukrainian national groups were reported to have gathered on a street near the Russian Embassy in the Ukrainian capital.

"It is now four years since Russian Federation invaded Ukraine and seized Crimea", the Polish foreign ministry said in a statement posted on its website. The European Union reiterates that it does not recognize and continues to condemn this violation of global law.

Ukraine said Friday that Russians will be unable to vote in this Sunday's presidential election because access to Moscow's diplomatic missions will be blocked.

Security has been stepped up outside Russian government installations in Ukraine after Kyiv announced that only diplomats would be allowed access to vote in Russia's presidential election.

Russian authorities have organized four polling stations in diplomatic missions located in Ukraine, namely in Kiev, Kharkiv, Lviv, and Odessa.

More than 40 global observers from 20 countries, including from Israel, Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Cyprus, Norway, Denmark and Ukraine, will cover the presidential election in Crimea. "Other individuals and citizens of Russian Federation will not be allowed to enter diplomatic establishments on that day", reads the statement. "By its actions, the Russian Federation has violated worldwide law and basic principles of relations between countries", the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement marking the anniversary.

"Four years after the illegal annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and (the city of) Sevastopol, France remains firmly attached to the full restoration of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity within internationally recognised borders", the French statement said.

However, should no candidate attain an absolute majority of the votes (more than half) in the first round, then according to Russian law a second round will take place exactly three weeks later, on April 8, 2018-provided the other candidate is still alive.
