Coincidentally, the AP reports, school resource officer who recommended that Cruz be committed was Scot Peterson - the same Broward Sheriff's Office deputy who resigned amid accusations he failed to respond to the shooting by staying outside the building where the killings occurred. Authorities say Cruz, a former student opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018, killing more than a dozen people and injuring several. Within days of the February 14 massacre, the Federal Bureau of Investigation admitted it had failed to act on a public tip in January, in which a caller warned Cruz had a "desire to kill people".

According to The Chicago Tribune, a commitment under the law would have made it more hard if not impossible for Nikolas Cruz to obtain a gun legally.

According to the documents, part of the 19-year-old's criminal case, he wrote the word "kill" in a notebook. The sheriff's deputy at the school, Scot Peterson, told a clinician that he wanted to initiate a Baker Act request against Mr. Cruz anyway, the records show, and two school counselors agreed.

Zachary Cruz told the arresting deputy that he was there to "reflect on the school shooting and to soak it in", according to the report. That law allows for involuntary commitment for mental health examination for at least three days.

Zachary Cruz faces trespassing charges, WPLG-TV reported.

That involuntary commitment would have been a serious obstacle or maybe even prevented Cruz from being able to legally obtain the AR-15 rifle used in the Parkland massacre, authorities say.

Five days earlier, on September 23, Ms. Cruz had summoned a different Henderson clinician to her home because Mr. Cruz was verbally aggressive and "punching holes in the wall". The clinic sent a mobile assistance team to Stoneman Douglas High on September 28, 2016, the records show, because Mr. Cruz had made threats and exhibited disturbing behavior following a breakup with a girlfriend.

Zachary Cruz, 18, was arrested about 4:30 p.m. after officials saw him riding his skateboard through the school campus, according to an arrest affidavit.

Some of the details in this report, including Cruz cutting himself and drinking gasoline, are not new.
