You know, there's a lot to be said about VW's strategy of using a very flexible platform to build vehicles. The Chattanooga plant also manufactures the Passat and the Atlas. The new, smaller variant to the Atlas will be the third Volkswagen model assembled at the Chattanooga factory.

We don't have many details as of this writing, Volkswagen only confirming that the SUV will be based on the company's modular MQB architecture, and that it's "designed and engineered for the American market".

Hinrich J. Woebcken, president and chief exec of VWOA (Volkswagen of America) lauded the Atlas and its contribution to VW's marketing effort.

In 2017, VW Group of America Chief Executive Officer Hinrich Woebcken told reporters at the NY auto show that the automaker planned to build a five-seat SUV in Tennessee, but he declined to say when production would begin. Ford recently estimated that SUV sales will grab half of the total US new-vehicle market by 2020. The person revealed this information on condition of anonymity to avoid pre-empting an official announcement Monday in Chattanooga. Haslam had nothing but praise for VW. The automaker invested $900 million in expanding the Chattanooga plant for Atlas production. And now, VW has confirmed that it's indeed a two-row Atlas that will be produced there, joining the three-row job in the VW lineup.

VW plans to reveal at the NY auto show next week a five-passenger SUV concept, presaging a model the automaker will build at its $900 million factory near Chattanooga that's assembling the seven-seat Atlas.

Approximately US$340 million (about RM1.3 billion) will be invested by Volkswagen to bring the five-seat Atlas to market.
