The target is part of the new Nissan M.O.V.E.to 2022 midterm plan.

On the all-electric front, Nissan reiterated its previously announced initiatives to launch new models.

The first expected vehicle in the electric offensive will be a crossover version of the Leaf that's previewed by the IMx concept of 2017 and due in 2019. Japan's number two automaker sold about 163,000 electric vehicles globally in 2017.

Nissan also proposes to have ProPilot autonomous drive technology in 20 models in 20 markets by 2022 and to offer connectivity for all new Nissan, Infiniti and Datsun cars by then. Also, the company aims to have an 8 per cent core operating profit margin and a cumulative free cash flow of 2.5 trillion yen.

Klein pledged to leverage the platform and powertrain assets of Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi to support the company's goals. So far, e-POWER has been primarily focused on the Japanese market, though earlier the year the automaker said it had plans to expand the footprint to the United States as well. The range would be completed with two other models sold under the Venucia brand.

Nissan will also continue to expand its e-POWER technology, already offered on the Nissan Note and Nissan Serena in Japan.

Nissan's target is that 40 per cent of total sales in Japan should be of electrified vehicles, by 2022 and the same figure is expected to touch 50 per cent by 2025. In the USA, the expectation is about 20% to 30% by 2025, while in China it's 35% to 40%. Starting in fiscal year 2021 Infiniti will only launch hybrid or pure electric vehicles.

Some fear a setback for the technology after a pedestrian was killed Sunday night in a crash involving a self-driving Uber SUV in the USA, the first death involving a full autonomous test vehicle. The company expects to sell 1 million ProPilot-equipped vehicles a year by 2022. It's unclear whether Nissan is talking about tech on the same level as the current ProPilot Assist system, which essentially combines adaptive cruise control with limited steering assist, or something more advanced. A pilot program for that will begin in Japan within twelve months.

Connectivity and mobility services. It will also provide a foundation to enable the expansion of connected and mobility services for Nissan, including robo-vehicle ride-hailing services.
