Cambridge Analytica's London offices raided by British investigators

Oscar Goodwin | 26 March, 2018, 02:33

Cambridge Analytica is at the centre of a data misuse storm that's wiped billions off the value of Facebook since newspaper revelations late last week revealed the extent of data swiped by the United Kingdom political consultancy which meant to use the information for the Trump campaign.

United Kingdom enforcement officers raided the headquarters of data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica Friday, hours after a judge issued a warrant in the wake of a mass data breach revealed earlier this week.

Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham has said she was looking at whether personal data was acquired in "an unauthorized way", whether there was sufficient consent to share the data, what was done to safeguard it and whether Facebook acted robustly when it found out about the loss of the data.

The government on Friday sent a notice to United Kingdom -based Cambridge Analytica asking whether it has misused data to profile Indians and influence elections in the country.

Steve Bannon who is Tump's ex chief strategist and was also a member of the "political consultancy" team working on the Facebook data to influence 2016 elections, offers a different perspective by saying that "Facebook data is for sale all over the world".

The insider account puts further pressure on the London-based data analytics firm, which is already facing renewed scrutiny in the United States and Europe over allegations it improperly harvested Facebook data to target U.S. voters. "This Facebook data was not used by Cambridge Analytica as part of the services it provided to the Donald Trump presidential campaign; personality targeted advertising was not carried out for this client either", it said. By utilizing niche-marketing tactics, Cambridge Analytica allegedly gave Trump an unfair advantage over his opponent, Hillary Clinton.

Facebook says the data in question was properly gathered a few years ago by psychology professor Aleksandr Kogan, who said he was using the data for academic purposes. "We have not undertaken any paid or unpaid work for them, okay?" he told a committee investigating fake news in United Kingdom politics. Lawmakers in the US have also called on Zuckerberg to testify about how Facebook safeguards user data.

Both Cambridge Analytica and Facebook deny any wrongdoing.

"The data and modeling Bolton's PAC received was derived from the Facebook data".
