After a judge authorized the charges, a state police detective declined to tell reporters what charges Strampel is facing, saying a news conference is scheduled for later.

Strampel was Nassar's boss at MSU from 2002 until Nassar was sacked in 2016.

A lawyer representing more than 150 Nassar survivors praised the MI attorney general for the arrest of Mr Strampel.

Two of the charges relate to his supervision of Nassar, the gymnastics doctor accused of molesting more than 200 patients under the guise of medical treatment.

The sexual assault charge is a high court misdemeanor, which means it carries a two-year maximum sentence. He's accused of willful neglect of duty in his dealings with Nassar.

Michigan State University President John Engler said in February he was moving to revoke tenure for Strampel for failing to enforce 2014 guidelines created for Nassar in treating young athletes after complaints of sexual misconduct against him.

One of the former Michigan State medical students described in the complaint - Nicole Eastman, a 2010 graduate of the school - said in a phone interview Tuesday that Strampel's abusive behavior "was accepted and normalized". Strampel then spoke about his working with 20- to 30-year-olds and said that some of his friends had sexual relations with women that age. Schuette had put a target on Strampel's back for some time; we're just finding out about it now.

Another witness said Strampel suggested she become a centerfold model and related to her how another student had become a stripper to pay for school, court documents said. Because Strampel did not follow up to make sure Nassar was abiding by the restrictions, he was able to commit a host of additional sexual assaults until he was sacked two years later, prosecutors said. "Given the context, [she] understood that she was being asked to do anything he wanted sexually in exchange for the favor".

In either 2006 or 2007, Strampel had a conversation with a woman, identified only as Victim 4, at a local flu clinic and turned the conversation to drinking.

At a scholarship dinner in 2014, as she posed for a picture with Strampel, the dean grabbed her buttock and squeezed it, she told police. The woman didn't report it then, she told police, because she "did not want to be thrown out of medical school".

Police who seized his computer in February found 50 photos of "bare vaginas, nude and semi-nude women, sex toys and pornography, they said". Police said numerous photos appeared to be "selfies" of female MSU students and that it appeared someone had tried to delete the photos.

"Many of the photos are of what appear to be nude selfies of female MSU students, as evidenced by the MSU clothing and piercings featured in multiple photos", the affidavit says.

The Journal also reported that Dr. Strampel had asked a student to perform a rectal exam on him in 2005, according to a memo written by individuals in that class and shared with a longtime faculty member shortly after the alleged incident.

Former Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine dean, William Strampel, was arrested Monday. the night before a planned update from the Attorney General's Office on its investigation of the university.

Larry Nassar's former boss at Michigan State University was taken into custody. No charge information is listed.

The felony charge of misconduct by a public official is punishable, upon conviction, of up to 5 years in prison and a $10,00 fine.

William Strampel, who was dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine until late a year ago, was charged Tuesday with a felony, a high court misdemeanor and two misdemeanors.
