Cricket Australia bans smith Warner and Bancroft for ball-tampering Virat Kohli Applauds Aiden Markram After Opener Hits Ton Against Australia

South Africa's Aiden Markram celebrates his century on Day One of the fourth Test against Australia at the Wanderers yesterday.

Having won the last two Tests to take an unassailable 2-1 lead coming into the final match, South Africa were unsurprisingly unchanged.

Seamer Pat Cummins was comfortably the most effective bowler, recording excellent figures of 5-83 as he troubled the South African batsmen throughout the innings, but he was not backed up by his fellow bowlers.

The trio were playing in place of Cameron Bancroft, David Warner and captain Steve Smith, who were all banned and sent home in disgrace after the ball-tampering scandal which rocked the third Test in Cape Town last weekend.

The Proteas tail were able to keep the Australians in the field for a further 48.5 overs on the second day and adding 175 runs to their overnight total of 313 for 6.

Openers Matthew Renshaw and Joe Burns, and No. 4 Peter Handscomb, all played their first games of the series and all failed in Australia's reply.

Considering the events that unfolded over the past week, it was an unusually quiet day for Australia, literally and otherwise.

Sayers was one of four changes in the Australian team, replacing Mitchell Starc, who was ruled out with a stress fracture of his lower right leg and has also the Indian Premier League.

However, he says, "We haven't played our best cricket, hopefully we can in this Test match".

When questioned about a possible appeal, Warner said: "That's something that I will continue to sit down with my family and weigh up all my considerations before I make any decisions".

As second-highest run-scorer only behind Markram, de Villiers has been a familiar thorn in the side of Australia throughout this series, and he continued to look comfortable, reaching another half-century in a stand of 52 with Temba Bavuma before a late Aussie fightback.

Cummins struck again the very next ball as he trapped South Africa captain Faf du Plessis lbw for a golden duck.

Temba Bavuma made 95 not out after he and Quinton de Kock fought their way through a testing early period against a ball that was nearly new in gloomy conditions.

Sayers, Handscomb and Renshaw all took catches.

The ongoing cricket world is surely going through a tough phase after the ball tampering controversy. Australia's cricket reputation was torn apart as details emerged of the three players' plot to cheat by roughing up the ball with a piece of sandpaper hidden in a pocket, and their lying to cover up some of the details.

Saker said: "Tried to care about each other this week".
