Microsoft Services Agreement issues Windows bends for Azure, Terry Myerson says soodbye to Microsoft

Microsoft's Terry Myerson who has been leading Microsoft's efforts in transforming Windows from a slow to update OS into a more regularly updated product to keep Windows fresh is out after 21 years of service.

Microsoft on Thursday, March 29th announced a major reorganisation with the formation of two main engineering teams, one focused on experiences and devices and the other on cloud and AI platforms.

The reorg includes the creation of two large new engineering groups inside Microsoft, focused on Experiences & Devices, led by Microsoft Office head Rajesh Jha; and the company's Cloud + AI Platform, led by Microsoft's cloud and enterprise chief Scott Guthrie.

Additionally, Microsoft has promoted Jason Zander to executive vice president, and he will oversee the company's Azure cloud computing service.

While this happens, Terry Myerson, the VP of Windows will be moving out of Microsoft.

A new team, dubbed AI Perception & Mixed Reality, to be led by Alex Kipman, a Microsoft Technical Fellow and the inventor of the Kinect and HoloLens devices.

"With change comes transition, and one transition we have been planning for is for Terry Myerson to pursue his next chapter outside Microsoft", wrote Nadella.

Myerson's departure also signals a shift in long-term plans. He will be working on the transition, together with Nadella, "over the coming months".

With Myerson's departure, Panos Panay will step up to the title of chief product officer. The Windows devices team combines with Office software, with the goal of building laptops and tablets that appeal to users of Microsoft's applications, including its Word and Excel programs and newer tools like email and Skype.

This has pushed Microsoft to focus on the internet cloud, artificial intelligence, and services for connected "internet of things" devices. Microsoft Store data still says that there are more than 600 million active devices using Windows 10.

Analyst Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group, meanwhile, sees Microsoft's new emphasis on hardware as part of a push to avoid falling behind the competition.

Nadella shared the news in an email to employees. Scott Guthrie who now head the Cloud division will lead this second engineering group focused on cloud and AI technology including Azure. AI + Research, the company's third engineering team that "is instrumental in the key technology advances required across all our product teams", will still be led by Harry Shum, Mr. Nadella wrote.

Enterprise Mobility and Management: Brad Anderson will continue to lead Microsoft's Windows Enterprise deployment and management efforts.
