Workers at the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees office chanted, banged drums and held signs saying "I Am" - one of the slogans for events surrounding the anniversary of King's death. He says the march promised to be a "very special" event for workers.

On the #50Th Anniversary of the assassination of Dr. #Martin Luther King, millions across the United States honored one of the greatest leaders of the Civil Rights Movement.

In the evening, Atlanta events culminate with a bell-ringing and wreath-laying at his crypt to mark the moment he was gunned down on the balcony of the old Lorraine Motel on April 4 1968.

Memphis was host to an "I Am A Man" march to the Mason Temple Church, where King gave his I've Been to the Mountaintop speech the night before he was killed. He delivered this speech the night before he was assassinated.

She says Dr. King's message touting the importance of human rights is just as important for all citizens today as it was fifty years ago.

"We put on our marching shoes", Lewis said during the "I am 2018" launch.

"By the end of the 20th century, you have a real black middle class in America, which Dr. King would certainly have taken some credit for and been encouraged by", Toure Reed, a history professor at Illinois State University, said on GLT's Sound Ideas.

But Saunders stressed that the objective of the week's commemorations was not just to look to the past. Now 70, she said she came to Memphis not only to honor King's legacy but to call for his work to be continued. But rather than despair, the resounding message repeated at the commemorations was one of resilience, resolve, and a renewed commitment to King's legacy and unfinished work.

On June 30, 1974, Alberta King had just finished playing "The Lord's Prayer" on the organ at Ebenezer Baptist when a man shouted, "I'm taking over here!"

Strickland said Memphis sanitation workers' conditions have improved greatly since 1968. He noted that he has been part of the struggle for 50 years, telling a reporter: "I'm still anxious and frustrated".

"It was a sad, sad day", Lucas said. Black Lives Matter activists are calling for a national "day of action" to protest the death of Stephon Clark and other unarmed black people who were fatally shot by police.

In Montgomery, Alabama, where King first gained notice leading a boycott against segregated city buses, came a symbol of transformation: The daughter of King's one-time nemesis, segregationist Gov. George C. Wallace, planned to participate in a program honoring the slain civil rights leader. Organizers also are planning a large June 23 rally in Washington - similar to what King had envisioned.

Today, the civil rights leader remains an iconic figure whose words continue to inspire people around the world.
