Stop Sinclair Broadcast Group!

Stop Sinclair Broadcast Group! Stop Sinclair Broadcast Group!
Michele Schwartz | 07 April, 2018, 00:59

"I write with concerns following Sinclair Broadcast Group's decision to require local news anchors at Sinclair-owned stations to deliver a scripted promotional message on-air", he said.

"Trump tweeted that the "'Fakers' at CNN, NBC, ABC & CBS have done so much dishonest reporting that they should only be allowed to get awards for fiction!" The group says it found at least 62 Sinclair stations reaching 29 states and the District of Columbia that have broadcast their own versions of the scripted segment.

The script, which is required to be read during news time rather than using up commercial spots, includes anchors saying they're "extremely proud of the quality, balanced journalism that [proper news brand name of local station] produces". His script was similar to the one the news anchors recently read, according to the newspaper.

A Sinclair executive says he finds it curious that the company would be attacked for asking news people to remind the audience that unsubstantiated stories exist on social media. More alarming, some media outlets publish these same fake stories... stories that just aren't true, without checking facts first.

Perhaps the most chilling part of the Sinclair script is the section which reads "Unfortunately, some members of the media use their platforms to push their own personal bias and agenda to control "exactly what people think".This is extremely risky to a democracy". "This is extremely risky to democracy".

On the show's most recent episode, however, Oliver had new reason to wade back in Sinclair's murky waters.

Journalists in local USA markets are chafing at the company's requirements, including a new promotional campaign that echoes President Donald Trump's anti-media rhetoric. "Last Week Tonight" host John Oliver highlighted Sinclair in 2017, focusing on its "must runs", scripts or segments that the company's stations are ordered to air.

INSKEEP: The Deadspin video played anchor after anchor after anchor saying this is extremely risky to our democracy, eventually raising the question of what actually was so unsafe to our democracy here.

The company is awaiting federal approval for its proposed $3.9 billion buyout of Tribune Media, a deal that would add Tribune's 42 TV stations to Sinclair's portfolio.

Speaking to Radio Sputnik's Loud & Clear, Tim Karr, senior director of strategy and communications at Free Press, explained that this behavior isn't exactly new since Sinclair has a history of using its network of local stations "to push its own political agenda".

Sinclair did not immediately respond to Newsweek's request for comment.

"It was a standard package, but an extended package, extended story where you'd hear more directly from candidate on the issue instead of hearing all the spin and all the rhetoric", Sinclair spokesman Scott Livingston told Politico.

Philly.com writer Rob Tornoe captured video from the three Pennsylvania news stations that aired Sinclair's promo.
