Australia shattered the women's 4×100 metres freestyle world record for their second gold medal on the opening night's finals at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games yesterday.

That broke the mark of 3:30.65 the Aussies - including the Campbells and McKeon - clocked at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016.

The New Zealand team of of Rushlee Buchanan, Racquel Sheath, Bryony Botha and Kirstie James had to settle for a distant second, while Canada earlier dispatched England to claim bronze.

There was no sleep-in for the world record-holders in the Commonwealth Games pool on Friday. "Everyone knows how much of a competitor I am and how much I love running for my country and my team-mates".

South African Henri Schoeman won the event by a healthy eight seconds, with another Australian, Matt Hauser, just missing out on bronze to Scotland's Marc Austin.

Canada finished second, almost four seconds behind.

"I'm really grateful that I got that final spot", Jack said. Wilmott's effort was then backed up by Thomas Hamer and Eleanor Robinson in the S14 200m freestyle and S7 50m butterfly respectively, before James Wilby stormed home over the last 50 to capture the men's 200m breaststroke. The 17-year-old Ruck also won two medals at the Rio Olympics and is one Canada's best young swimmers.

Horton added a Commonwealth gold to his Olympic title, easily winning the 400 in 3:43.76, about 1.5 seconds ahead of Australian teammate Jack McLoughlin.

Some 6,600 athletes from 71 nations and territories - all of them former British colonies that now make up the Commonwealth of Nations - are taking part in 18 sports (seven para-sports) for a chance to pick up a total of 275 gold medals.

Wilmott, beaten by Miley in the 2014 Glasgow final, fought back tenaciously in the final freestyle leg to pip the Scot by 0.26secs with Australia's Blair Evans third.

"It's nice to have a medal but I want gold - and with all the training I've done, I want to earn it". "I would have preferred it to be a full-distance race on a super-hard course", Alistair said, lamenting the decision to race over sprint distance, or half an Olympic course.
