Raikkonen fastest in Bahrain 2nd practice

Daniel Ricciardo Red Bull Australian Grand Prix GETTYDaniel Ricciardo admits Red Bull do not have the qualifying pace of Ferrari and Mercedes

"Yesterday our race pace didn't look bad in second practice but it wasn't as good as it was in FP1 or what it is now so it is encouraging to know that I believe our auto will be better than it was yesterday".

But he would step up to the plate taking fifth and shall be promoted to fourth on the grid for the race after the five-place gearbox penalty for Lewis Hamilton.

SAKHIR, Bahrain (AP) - Kimi Raikkonen topped the leaderboard ahead of Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel in the second practice session for the Bahrain Grand Prix on Friday.

A similar result would be a welcome gift for McLaren in this home race of sorts, and they are still competitive in the closely-matched midfield pack, so Alonso and Vandoorne will have their sights firmly focused on the top 10 on Sunday in an attempt to stave off further scrutiny after also being beaten by both works Renaults during qualifying.

"We know that is tougher for us in the race than on one lap performance", said Gasly.

But Verstappen's chances were shattered in the first qualifying session as he crashed into the barriers after losing the rear end of his auto at turn two.

In a boost for Ferrari, both Mercedes cars were more than half a second slower than the best lap set by Raikkonen, who would be investigated by race stewards for an unsafe auto release following a pitstop.

Verstappen is not ruling out recovering to fight for the podium and his confidence comes from the long-run pace Red Bull were able to display during the practice sessions on Friday and Saturday. With such fine margins, any one of the three teams could prove to be quickest during Sunday's race.

The Toro Rosso had looked quick over one lap all weekend, but such is the ferocious nature of the midfield battle that team mate Brendon Hartley missed out on a place in Q3 by just under 0.1s.

"I got traffic on the first lap so I had to go for the second lap, and for sure there's a bit of lap time there".

Ricciardo's Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen will start only 15th after crashing out in Q1.

The spin, followed by a slide into the barrier in this instance, was Verstappen's second in as many weeks, as he spun his auto after sustaining damage to the floor in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

The Dutchman got out and helped marshals push the auto back to the pitlane.

"Not the amount of running I wanted but I think second practice was really decent in the long run", Verstappen said.

The second practice session will start at 4 p.m. BST (11 a.m. ET).

Vettel won in Melbourne, profiting from an error by Mercedes to finish ahead of Hamilton. "I'll try to improve the feeling and balance to put myself in the best position possible".
