He said the government had divided the country on religious lines and was now trying to divide it between Dalit and non-Dalits.

"The entire country knows that PM Modi is anti-Dalit, it is not a secret".

"Some days back, a BJP leader said that Opposition members were animals".

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) aim is to divide the country while adding that it is against the ideology of Dalits and Tribals.

Lovely said, "This is a symbolic fast, not an indefinite fast".

Along with Rahul Gandhi, senior Congress leaders Sheila Dikshit, Kamal Nath, P C Chacko, Ajay Maken and Randeep Singh Surjewala were present at Rajghat.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra also took a dig at Rahul Gandhi for turning up at Rajghat at 1 pm while the fast had started at 10.30 am, saying it shows that the Congress chief can not wake up in morning as he and his colleagues were used to "politics of luxury".

The protest organised by the Congress witnessed its first controversy when party leaders Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler, both accused in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, arrived at Rajghat.

Another BJP spokesperson Bizay Sonkar Shastri raked up the Congress' alleged ill-treatment of Dalit icon Bhimrao Ambedkar and said it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who had been working overtime to fulfil Ambedkar's dreams. The BJP follows ideology of oppressing Dalit, Tribal and minorities.

Delhi BJP leader Harish Khurana alleged that the Congress leaders were eating to their heart's content to prep for their daylong fast.

Speaking to reporters at Rajghat, Gandhi also said the grand old party will defeat the BJP-led NDA in the 2019 general election.

BJP's official Twitter handle also showed a photograph of local Delhi Congress leaders eating "chhola bhaturas", which they claimed was ahead of the fast.

Rahul Gandhi should tell them when he plans to sit on a fast against crimes against Dalits in Karnataka, Sambit Patra asked. "Divide the society, divide religions, divide communities, divide castes, that is the DNA of the Modi government". The truth is that today every person in the country is standing against the government.

"That is an idea we will continue to defend", he said. Asked about the row over Kumar and Tytler, he said, "Some conspirators in the BJP try to find meaning in everything small or big thing". "U all can enjoy sumptuous Chandni Chowk Chowle-Bature as much as you like, but fasting was a weapon used by Gandhiji to fight Britishers & you guys are making a mockery of it", he tweeted.
