Candidate list circulated on social media for Karnataka polls 'fake': Congress

During his visit to Karnataka on April 7 and 8, Congress president Rahul Gandhi too had deliberated on the names of candidates and their ability to win.

Mumbai: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday released a list of 72 candidates for Karnataka assembly contest.

Karnataka is scheduled to go for Assembly election in May this year.

Karnataka BJP President and the party's CM candidate BS Yeddyurappa will contest from Shikaripura while B Sriramulu, the party MP from Ballari district will contest the Assembly polls and will be the party's candidate from Molakalmuru in Chitradurga district. Soon after the list began to attract heat, the Congress party came out with a clarification and said that it was a "fake press release and AICC has not issued anything regarding this". According to a report in The Indian Express, the first list figures candidates fighting for 72 out of the 224 seats of the state assembly.

Sundara Devinagara was welcomed to the BJP at a function in the morning by U Rajesh Naik, who will be contesting from Bantwal constituency against state Forests Minister B Ramanath Rai.

The announcement came late Sunday night after the party's Central Election Committee held a meeting presided over by BJP Amit Shah.

However, as the candidate selection process is already mired in controversy as a large number of sitting MLAs from Karnataka have reportedly sought tickets for their family members. He returned to BJP following the announcement of Narendra Modi as party's prime ministerial candidate ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
