Brendan Buck, counselor to the speaker, says the "the speaker is proud of all that has been accomplished".

Reports of Mr Ryan's departure have circulated for months.

US House Speaker Paul Ryan, the top Republican in Congress, has told fellow Republicans in the House of Representatives that he will not seek re-election in November, his office said. Ryan joins a growing list of Republican House members who are stepping away from Congress.

Two people with knowledge of Ryan's thinking said he has decided against seeking another term, but they did not say why.

Ryan's future on Capitol Hill had been a topic of conversation ahead of a hard campaign season, as Republicans try to keep the House majority.

Ryan's decision not to seek re-election will only reinforce the belief among Republicans that they will struggle to retain control of the chamber, Axios reported.

Majority Whip Steve Scalise, the third ranking GOP member in the House, suggested to Fox News' "Fox and Friends" that Ryan would be addressing his retirement later on Wednesday. House GOP leadership is scheduled to have its weekly news conference on Capitol Hill at 10 a.m. ET Wednesday.

"The Speaker assured the president that those were not accurate reports and that they look forward to working together for a long time to come", Sanders said. "He will be successful in any future endeavor and I wish him all the best".
