VirnetX Holding Corp. won $502.6 million against Apple Inc. after a federal jury in Texas said the maker of iPhones was infringing patents for secure communications, the latest twist in a dispute now in its eighth year.

Over two years ago, VirnetX announced that it was seeking $532 million in damages from Apple over patent infringements relating to iMessage, FaceTime, and VPN technologies. Since 2010 it has been involved in legal battles with Apple over its.

One of the main reasons why VirnetX has been successful this time around is because it filed the lawsuit in Eastern Texas, which is a region that's notorious for ruling in favor of patent trolls.

VirnetX is a patent-assertion entity, meaning its entire business model rests exclusively on suing companies that actually develop and sell products based on arcane patent infringement laws and loose interpretations of intellectual property regulations. The case isn't dead yet though, the United States legal system has plenty of room for additional appeals and Apple is exploring those options already.

VirnetX's stock skyrocketed by 44 percent on Tuesday after the jury concluded Apple was violating its patents.

In 2017 however, Apple filed an appeal against the USA district court verdict, though it lost the case. "The evidence was clear", Kendall Larsen said to reporters following the announcement of the verdict.

Apple has been dealt what may be a short-lived blow in a long-fought battle with VirnetX. But it has been speculated that the decision is likely to be scrapped as the Patent Trial & Appeal Board has claimed the patents under investigation to be invalid.
