There's bad news about PlayStation 5 launch

PS4 white controller SONYPS5 release date is still a few years away
Oscar Goodwin | 12 April, 2018, 00:51

Just recently a big juicy rumour from Semi-Accurate suggested we could see a new PlayStation this year.

What about the supposed PlayStation 5 development kits?

That's what I said then, but Kotaku's Jason Schreier has backed up that gut feeling. Two people "directly familiar" with Sony's plans told him that there was no chance of the PS5 releasing in 2018. Of course, these plans could always change.

The source suggests that while an imminent release is unlikely, Sony could be forced into action by surprise moves from other companies. It would be nearly suicidal of Sony to steal the spotlight out of PlayStation 4 right when it's more profitable and some of the best games are just coming out. Some of those insiders - who are not identified by name - state that they have firsthand knowledge of Sony's console plans and don't believe that the PlayStation 5 will be released in 2018 or 2019. At some point, Sony's probably looked at every possible date.

One particular thing of note from the report is that developers at some of Sony's first-party studios have yet to hear anything about the PS5.

Another rumour making the rounds is that a large number of dev kits had already been distributed to studios. In that case, there would have been supply chain leaks all over the place.

That's because early development kits for any console don't resemble that console's final form at all. As such, even if there are any such devkits they may be well disguised. The story previously stated PS5 may not run PS4 games, when the source stated that reports indicated PS5 games would not work on previous generation hardware.

Rocketcat Games and Madgarden have announced that Death Road To Canada will be heading to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch later this month.

Don't worry, the next generation of consoles isn't going to be full of lifeless games that feel like they were created by a computer, but as engines get smarter, they will be able to procedurally generate more content on their own based on predetermined values set by the artists and creators. In fact, word on the street with actual developers seems to be hinting at a potential 2020 release date.
