The federal government has been vocal in its backing of the Trans Mountain expansion of the pipeline between Alberta and the B.C. coast since the Texas-based company announced Sunday that it was suspending all non-essential spending on the project, citing British Columbia's opposition.

Kinder Morgan Canada (OTCPK:KMLGF) said earlier this week it will scrap the C$7.4B expansion project from Alberta to the west coast unless all legal and jurisdictional challenges are resolved by May 31, but a government source tells Reuters that "there aren't an bad lot of options for the prime minister".

He said Notley and the prime minister should at least consider building more oil refineries in Canada.

"I think it's a reasonable way forward and I would be absolutely delighted to participate".

"There's not a Canadian that wouldn't rather put Fort Mac Strong in their gas tank than buying from Venezuela and Khazakstan and Nigeria", May said this week.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office confirmed the meeting to reporters aboard the prime minister's plane bound for the Summit of the Americas in Peru shortly before issuing a press release, reports the Global News.

Trudeau summoned Horgan and Notley for the meeting over the escalating dispute. He's flying back to Ottawa to meet the premiers before heading to France and England.

The Alberta government will introduce legislation on Monday created to put pressure on B.C., including the right to cut shipments of oil and gasoline, driving up pump prices.

"I'm happy to hear what the prime minister and perhaps Rachel Notley has to say", Horgan said.

"I don't feel there's any need for saber rattling, for provocation or for threats", Horgan said. Earlier in the week, the Alberta Premier said her province was looking into an outright purchase of the pipeline, which would transport oil-sands bitumen through Vancouver, to ensure it gets built - despite a looming court challenge from British Columbia.

"We are in court following the rule of law".

Heyman says the government is trying to defend the B.C. coast, its environment and jobs from the potentially disastrous impacts of an oil products spill.

It's unclear when the case could be heard, and Kinder Morgan has set a deadline of May 31 to receive assurances that the pipeline will be able to move forward.
