Apple chose to ditch support for 32-bit devices with iOS 11 and it promised to make a similar move for Mac apps as well.

Apple indicated to developers at the 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) that High Sierra (10.13), the current version of macOS, will be the last version to support 32-bit apps "without compromise", though the specific meaning of that terminology is, as of yet, unclear.

Similar to Microsoft and Windows 10, Apple has been slowly transitioning to 64-bit hardware and software over the course of the last decade. This gives them time to prepare accordingly, though 32-bit apps will continue to run and function properly for the time being.

"While developers optimize their apps for 64-bit compatibility, Apple is notifying customers when they are using an app based on 32-bit technology". Also, even Apple hasn't moved all its apps to 64-bit.

In addition to receiving the alert once when a 32-bit app is launched, Apple also lets users check for 64-bit compatibility through the system report feature. At the time, the tech giant confirmed that macOS High Sierra would be the last operating system to run 32-bit apps.

"All modern Macs include powerful 64-bit processors, and macOS runs advanced 64-bit apps, which can access dramatically more memory and enable faster system performance", the document reads. However, it is believed that the 32-bit apps won't work as well as they use to before. It is believed that Apple will require developers to only build 64-bit apps starting this June. For this, one needs to go to the Apple menu and select This Mac, and then click the System Report button. Scroll to Software, select Applications, and then check the 64-bit field.

Further, the support page also explains to the users the advantages of using the 64-bit apps. One of the items is 64-bit (Intel).

Back in January, Apple's beta release notes for macOS 10.14.3 said that these notifications would begin happening with that version's public release, but they didn't start when that update first became available.

Apple iOS users who still have 32-bit apps, get a pop-up when they tap that app's icon. Finally in iOS 11 it dropped support for 32-bit apps.

Keep following us to get the next update from Apple on this matter. As for macOS, it is optimized to work with 64-bit applications.
