BJP MPs starting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi observed a day-long fast against the continuous disruption of the budget session of the Parliament by opposition parties. The CPI contingent included its State assistant secretary JV Satyanarayana Murthy, and leaders AJ Stalin and Vimala. "The Congress knew very well that they can not debate in any of the Houses so they did not let the Parliament function". The party also declared expenditures accruing to Rs 710.057 crore during 2016-17 while Congress incurred an expenditure of Rs 321.66 crore which is Rs 96.30 crore more than its income for the same period.

Launching a counter-attack on Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday accused the grand old party of not letting the country to move forward. More than Rs 606 crore, or almost 59 per cent, of the total expenditure incurred by the BJP was spent on election-related activities and propaganda.

He attached Modi's travel schedule in Tamil Nadu, that showed that the Prime Minister would be having his breakfast on board the IAF BBJ at 6.40 a.m. Later, the BJP leaders will have meals prepared from cereals collected from the farmers and their families to express solidarity.

The Congress on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to think of "accountability" in the previous year of his tenure instead of resorting to "escapism", describing Thursday's planned fast by the BJP as the worst kind of political chicanery.

The BJP's fast comes days after the Congress held a nationwide fast on April 9 to protest against Dalit atrocities and acts of communal violence that have seen a flare up across the country.

While many, including Modi and home minister Rajnath Singh, kept to their work while fasting, several ministers like Prakash Javadekar, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Piyush Goyal, travelled to their constituencies to sit on the fast. The Prime Minister will visit the Cancer Institute, Adyar in Chennai on Thursday. "We spoke for adequate representation of Dalits and backward classes at police stations and Tehsil offices, and we were told that our demands will be looked into", he said.

Addressing the gathering, the MP said the Congress and other Opposition parties had put a bad name to the Indian Parliament by causing frequent and continuous disruption in its daily proceedings. The BJP alleged that the Congress did not allow parliament to function, initially on account of the bank scams.

"Now, "jumla" fast gets over in an hour and feast after that".

"Even the no-confidence motion was not taken up for discussion".
