James, seeking his ninth career trip to the NBA Finals and fourth league title, had not dropped a first-round playoff game since the New York Knicks beat Miami in the fourth game of the 2012 opening round, a minor setback on the Heat's title run, a career first for James.

Boston's Terry Rozier hit the expected game-winner for Boston to take a three-point lead with just over a second left.

The Celtics hung on to claim a 113-107 victory in Game One of their first-round series on Monday (NZ time) at a packed Boston Garden.

"I just love playing with these guys and they just give me all the confidence in the world, but this year is probably the best one", he said.

"But we stayed resilient, went to overtime, and got the win".

Boston Coach Brad Stevens loves the postseason because it offers a chance to "bust narratives".

But Bucks guard Kris Middleton, from well behind the three-point line and 11 metres from the basket, fired up a "Hail Mary" three-pointer to tie the score 99-99 and send it into overtime. It's just a really resilient group of kids. Terry Rozier contributed 23 points in his first career playoff start, Marcus Morris added 21 points and seven boards off the bench and Jaylen Brown put up 20 points.

Rozier finished with 21 points, three rebounds and four assists for the Celtics.

The game went to extra time following a wild finish in regulation that included back-to-back 3-pointers in the closing seconds. "Hopefully in Game 2 I won't play on my heels and I'll play more on my toes and be able to defend without fouling". "We were clogging the 3-point line". And he made it.

But when Brown knocked down a three and got the crowd back in it, the C's were now only trailing by seven with less than four minutes to play in the second.

"The coaches did a great job getting our mind off it and getting us to continue to play".

Antetokounmpo led all Bucks scorers with 35 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists.

Game 2 is Tuesday night at TD Garden.

Terry Rozier had a few struggles early in Game 1 of the Celtics' first-round National Basketball Association playoff series against the Milwaukee Bucks, but he rallied down the stretch and was an important figure in the 113-107 overtime victory.

Milwaukee and Boston split their four-game, regular-season series, with each team winning once on the other's home court.

Milwaukee simply didn't get enough help to carry the load for Middleton and Antetokounmpo. Tatum then came down with another defensive rebound on the second missed free throw on a play in which Eric Bledsoe fouled out of the game.

Leading up to that, the Celtics had a 10-point advantage, before Malcolm Brogdon connected ona triple with 10 seconds remaining to tie it up at 96-96.

Antetokounmpo made one of two free throws at the 14.8 mark, and then committed his sixth and final foul fighting for a loose ball with Rozier, who made one of two free throws with 13 ticks to go.
