President Trump reportedly tried to block Vice President Pence's national security adviser pick because he previously worked on anti-Trump ads for a conservative group.

This was Pence's first media interaction after USA forces launched precision strikes against Assad regime targets associated with the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

Pence, however, justified the attack by merely stating that the U.S. did not act alone, claiming that other leaders at the Latin American summit had both publicly and privately expressed support for the Syria bombardment.

The vice president, filling in for Trump at the Summit of the Americas, said the USA remained "hopeful" that with the cooperation of Great Britain and France, and support of allies like Canada, "that we will see Syria, and their patrons in Russian Federation and Iran, once and for all abandon the use of chemical weapons against innocent civilians".

And while Trump grapples with the ongoing Russian Federation investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, Pence sought to draw a bright line against Vladimir Putin's alliance with Syria following the suspected chemical attack.

The prospective aide, Jon Lerner, "informed the Vice President that he was withdrawing from coming on board as national security advisor and the Vice President accepted his decision", Pence's spokeswoman Alyssa Farah said late Sunday in a statement.

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh issued a statement Saturday saying "escalating violence through further military action is not the way to bring peace and stability to Syria and the surrounding region", and calling for more funds to investigate atrocities in Syria. And with tensions simmering over trade, Pence expressed hope alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that the three nations could soon agree to a renegotiated North American Free Trade Agreement.

Pence left the summit late Friday so he could confer with US congressional leaders by telephone from his hotel suite about Trump's plans to announce the missile strikes. Left unsaid was whether Pence's overtures might eventually lead to a joint Trump-Pena Nieto meeting, their first.

He further mentioned of the NAFTA wall being built up at the US-Mexico border while saying that United States, Mexico, and Canada are close to renegotiating a new NAFTA deal.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was barred from attending the summit over his plans to hold a presidential election that the opposition is boycotting and that many foreign governments consider a sham.
