Facebook Is Tracking You Online, Even If You Don't Have an Account

While Facebook says it will not be applying the GDPR to the rest of the world just yet, CEO Mark Zuckerberg says the company does intend to expand privacy settings around the world.

For those without a Facebook account who are concerned about the company tracking them across the web, there is little that can be done to stay away from its Eye of Sauron-like gaze. "The protection of American elections from foreign interference can not be left to voluntary measures by tech companies", he said. And to get people to join (or re-join) the site.

"When you visit a site or app that uses our services, we receive information even if you're logged out or don't have a Facebook account", wrote David Baser, Facebook's product management director, in the blog post.

How many categories (i.e. attributes, factors, labels, or data points) does Facebook collect about particular users?

"'Whether it's information from apps and websites or information you share with other people on Facebook, we want to put you in control - and be transparent about what information Facebook has and how it is used".

It looks like Facebook is still shedding light on the types of data it is collecting.

So in 2015, Illinois-based Facebook users sued the company for violating the law, claiming that they had suffered a loss of property due to Facebook's data scraping-the property, in this case, being the algorithms that make up their digital identities. Evidence suggested that Russians had purchased Facebook ads that were directed at USA voters.

Facebook also committed to making it easier for users to access the data shared with the platform by downloading a secure copy and moving it to another service. As per Baser, 'It is because the other apps and websites don't know who is using Facebook'. And it says that others like Google and Twitter do it too so why single out Facebook on the issue.

A series of tough inquiries about how much personal information Facebook vacuums up on and off its social network seemed particularly vexing for Zuckerberg, who couldn't quantify it.

Facebook told Garaufis that content it hosts "is organic, and that Facebook is not responsible for it", Robert Tolchin, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said in a statement. "It's not a binary thing, it's not about switching it on or off". While maintaining that Facebook had adhered to the terms of the settlement, Zuckerberg repeatedly conceded that the company still made mistakes that led to the personal details about 87 million Facebook users being turned over to Cambridge Analytica, a data-mining firm tied to President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign. During this week's hearings Zuckerberg talked about users having informed consent but that's not happening in the courts. If I can hit those three marks, I'd be happy to use anything. "I can have our team get back to you afterwards". And from the very beginning, the creators of Facebook and Twitter struggled to find revenue streams to finance their expensive-to-maintain platforms.
