Romaine lettuce: Things things to know more about the latest E.Coli outbreak that has spread across 11 countries, exactly what exactly the CDC says concerning this, and also the reason why your salads may be the cause of it.

A multi-state outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections is linked to romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region.

Officials are advising consumers to avoid any romaine lettuce products, including salad mixes, that contain chopped romaine lettuce.

The CDC's expanded warning today did not go as far as Consumer Reports, a non-profit organization, did in recent days, urging people to avoid eating any form of romaine lettuce from any region because of the "potentially fatal consequences" until the government declares it "definitely safe".

The CDC has not identified a common grower, supplier, distributor or brand at this time. However, more serious cases can lead to a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

There's a new warning for anyone who has recently bought any type of romaine lettuce: if you don't know where it was grown, throw it out. Nugget Markets, Safeway and Raley's told us the romaine lettuce they sell does not come from the Yuma, Arizona growing region.

Although the exact source of the tainted lettuce hasn't been identified, federal officials have said information indicates the contaminated lettuce was grown in that southeast corner of Arizona.

There have been reported cases in Pennsylvania, Idaho, New Jersey, Connecticut, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Virginia, Washington, California, Alaska, Arizona, Louisiana and Montana.

Most E. coli are harmless and actually are an important part of a healthy human intestinal tract.

Consumers who have store-bought romaine lettuce in their fridges are being advised to throw it away.

People usually get sick from Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) 2-8 days (average of 3-4 days) after swallowing the germ.

Some infections are very mild, but others are severe or even life-threatening.

One person died as a result of the outbreaks in 2017.
