Rumors say we won't have to wait long until we will be able to play Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. One source was unsure if it wasn't just the zombies mode being described as a campaign stand-in, others suggested it could be something new and distinct.
If these rumors hold water, this would make Call of Duty:Black Ops 4 the first mainline Call of Duty title not to have a traditional campaign.
It is also heavily rumoured that a battle royale mode will ship in the game. Speaking to anonymous sources, the site reports that Treyarch has instead chose to focus on the multiplayer and Zombies mode.

The decision to have no single-player story was made after Treyarch, the developers of Black Ops 4, determined that it couldn't finish building the campaign in time for release. We'll know more in May after the official reveal. The game may still feature a campaign, something that is different from the traditional way of doing things. If a battle royale mod does indeed come to Call of Duty, it'll be the first major franchise to implement such a feature, rather than the comparatively smaller studios that worked on PUBG and Fortnite. Reports indicate that both Activision and developer Treyarch are looking to explore multiplayer and zombie elements. All will be revealed at a community event on May 17th, we'll be sure to keep you posted on any Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 news in the coming weeks.
