US Senate confirms CIA director Mike Pompeo as Trump's secretary of state
27 April, 2018, 01:06
The US Senate has confirmed former Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo as secretary of state, ending a tough confirmation battle.
"I am pleased with the Senate's confirmation of Mike Pompeo to serve as our country's top diplomat", President Trumpsaid in a statement.
In a statement, U.S. President Donald Trump called Pompeo a patriot whose "immense talent, energy, and intellect" will serve the nation well.
Republican senators, who control the upper chamber, voted unanimously on Thursday to confirm Mr Pompeo.
Pompeo's confirmation was hustled to Thursday ensure he would be able to attend a Friday conference of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation foreign ministers in Brussels as the newly confirmed secretary of state. He has my support. "Mike Pompeo understands this and will make it happen as Secretary of State", Perkins continued. "I'm looking forward to serving the American people and getting to work right away".
Pompeo has been installed after US President Donald Trump made a decision to replace previous State Secretary Rex Tillerson over policy disputes and clashes with the president.
Senator Ben Cardin, a senior Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that attitude, and Pompeo's backing for Washington's withdrawal from the nuclear agreement if it can not be changed, were among reasons he opposed him.
While Mr Tillerson disagreed with Mr Trump on many foreign policy matters, his replacement is a staunch Trump loyalist. The meet was supposed to take place in April but was postponed.
Immediately after the vote, pro-life leaders praised President Donald Trump's choice for the position.
"Mike Pompeo is trusted by the president, and his experience as CIA Director, Congressman, and Captain in the U.S. Army demonstrates that he is qualified to be Secretary of State".
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has sworn in Mike Pompeo as secretary of state at the Supreme Court. Pompeo, a staunch Iran critic, has long deplored the 2015 nuclear accord, but has supported Trump's efforts to get European allies to strengthen restrictions on Iran.
In Belgium, he will represent the U.S. at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation foreign ministerial and meet with counterparts, including the Turkish and Italian foreign ministers.
Pompeo's confirmation comes after weeks of uncertainty as to whether he would make it through the Senate at all, given the robust objection from almost every corner of civil society and with theearly opposition of Sen. "But I have to tell you, through the process of him going through the confirmation hearings and the conversations we've had, the meetings we've had, I think he's going to be exemplary". At the White House, John R. Bolton, the administration's third national security adviser in a little over a year, is presiding over another purge of top assistants. To deny or delay Trump's nomination would be somewhat obstructive - especially since he is one of a few who have had direct contact and all seemed to be on target for more negotiations between Trump and the N. Korean leader.
