The tensions between Israel and Iran escalated after Israel released documents revealing Iran's nuke program earlier this month, and U.S. President Donald Trump's highly controversial withdrawal from the historic Iran nuclear treaty. And Israel afraid that with a growing Iran's presence in Syria, Syria would become another front for confrontation with Israel and therefore Israel tries to prevent the consolidation of Iran in Syria.

He said there was no way to know why Tehran had chosen to use its lower quality and lower precision missiles, though possibly Israeli warnings had deterred it from using more powerful precision weapons which might cause a greater retaliation from Israel. So far Russian Federation has done little if anything to limit the Israeli air force's freedom of movement in the skies over Lebanon and Syria.

"Iran has crossed a red line".

The extent of the damage inflicted by the Israeli airstrikes was not immediately clear.

Rami Abdurrahman, the head of the SOHR, said the Israeli defense minister's comments on the scale of the strike were "mere publicity". It said three people were killed and two were wounded.

The dead include five Syrian soldiers and 18 non-Syrian allies, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. It was not immediately clear if any Iranians were among the dead.

Lieberman said Israel hit "almost all the Iranian infrastructure in Syria".

It blamed Iran's Quds force, adding that Israel's anti-missile system intercepted four while the rest did not land in its territory.

Russian Federation and Israel coordinate their actions within Syria for the objective of deconfliction.

The missile launcher responsible for the Iranian rocket strikes was also destroyed, according to the release.

The Times described the Israeli counterattack as "one of the country's largest aerial operations in decades across the Syrian frontier, and by far its broadest direct attack yet on Iranian assets". It said half of the missiles were shot down.

"We don't want an escalation, but won't let anyone attack us or build an infrastructure to attack us in the future", Lieberman said. "I hope that we ended this chapter and that everyone understood".

A sign of Damascus in the Israeli controlled Golan Heights near the border with Syria in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights.

Israel captured the Golan Heights in the 1967 war and annexed it in 1981.

In 1974, Israel and Syria agreed to a ceasefire and a disengagement and United Nations peacekeepers deployed to the area.

Iran is a Syrian ally, and its military has been supporting President Bashar al-Assad. But it also emphasizes the diminishing United States influence in Syria - and the region in general.

Syrian air defenses that fired on Israeli forces were also targeted, he said.

Israel carried out the raids after it said around 20 rockets were fired from Syria at its forces in the occupied Golan Heights at around midnight.

IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, told The New York Times that Israel responded to the attack but didn't provide details.

The two sides have been on a collision course for months. In April, Israel announced that it was able to determine that the drone had been armed and on an attack mission. It may have been surprised by how much the Israelis seem to know about its activities in Syria, but it is unlikely to be dissuaded from its efforts.

Conricus said intelligence, logistics, storage and vehicles as well as the origin of the rockets were targeted.
