"A journalist suffered minor injuries after being struck in the foot by a gas bomb", he said.

At least one protester was killed and more than 700 injured, Gaza health authorities said, as weeks of deadly violence were building to a pair of large demonstrations expected next week.

Since the Hamas-led marches began at the end of March, 44 Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,700 wounded from Israeli army fire.

Israeli forces have shot dead a 40-year-old man, Jaber Salem Abu Mustafa, east of Khan Younis, according to the health ministry.

Yousef Munayyer, political analyst at the Arab Center of Washington, DC, and executive director of the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, said Trump will mark the anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba, the dispersal and displacement of Palestinians from their homeland 70 years ago, by opening a US embassy in Jerusalem.

On Monday, the demonstrations will also show their unhappiness over the inauguration of the United States embassy, which comes five months after Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Next week's climax will focus on the USA embassy move to Jerusalem, taking place on Monday, and commemorating Nakba (catastrophe) day, when Palestinians mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the state of Israel and the birth of the Palestinian refugee problem. He has raised the possibility of a mass border breach, comparing protesters to a "starving tiger", unpredictable and full of pent-up anger.

Fifty staffers are expected to be at the new embassy, and U.S. officials - despite deep Palestinian resentment about the move - are saying that it will "create a platform to move forward with the peace process on basis of realities [on the ground]".

Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar declared on May 10 that he hopes that Palestinians are able to penetrate the Israel-Gaza fence during the upcoming riots, which is essentially an admission that this has been Hamas's goal all along. "They need to kill every last one of us to change the facts".

The Gaza Strip, home to 2 million people, is run by the Islamist group Hamas which has fought three wars against Israel in the past decade.

Trump administration officials say the move is simply a recognition of a reality and that they do not in any way intend to prejudge the outcome of final borders or sovereignty in a peace deal. Israel and Egypt maintain an economic blockade of the strip, which has the highest unemployment rate in the world and has become far poorer than the other main Palestinian territory, the Israeli-occupied West Bank. On Friday, Palestinian protesters started fires on the Palestinian side of the crossing, damaging gas pipelines leading to the enclave, the IDF said.
