Hamburg relegated from Bundesliga for first time

Hamburg CHAOS as Bundesliga side are relegated for the first time in 55 years EPA Hamburg fans did not react well to their relegation

A clock in the Volksparkstadion displays - to the second - how long Hamburg had been in the German top flight but will now need to be reset followings the club's relegation.

Ten-man Hamburg were relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time on Saturday, sparking angry fan demonstrations, despite the team pulling off a 2-1 home victory over Borussia Monchengladbach.

The day started disastrously for Hamburg, as Joshua Guilavogui fired Wolfsburg ahead in the opening minute against Cologne.

Jonas Hector brought Cologne level just after the half-hour mark with an exquisite chip, but Divock Origi restored the lead for Wolfsburg, edging Hamburg closer to disaster.

Until today, Hamburg were the only club never to face relegation from Germany's top flight competition since its formation in 1963.

There were troubling scenes in the 90th minute of the match as police were forced to storm onto the pitch after one section of the home support let off a series of flares and fireworks, which engulfed the stand behind the goal in smoke, delaying the end of the game.

Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Buerki gifted Hoffenheim possession with a terrible clearance on 26 minutes, allowing Andrej Kramaric to fire the home side in front.

Dortmund's marginally better goal difference - three goals - over Bayer Leverkusen, who conceded two goals against Hanover after leading 3-0, meant they finished fourth and grabbed the lucrative European spot which takes them into the group stage.

That placing will see Stuttgart join Leverkusen and Leipzig in the Europa League, providing Frankfurt do not overcome Bayern in next weekend's DFB-Pokal final.

Everton loanee Ademola Lookman ran the show with a goal and two assists as RB Leipzig booked Europa League football by winning 6-2 at Hertha Berlin.

For Bayern Munich, who wrapped up the title last month, Saturday was supposed to be a day of celebration, as they were presented with the Bundesliga trophy for the sixth season in a row.
