At least nine people were killed and another almost 40 injured as an intense clash went on between Taliban assailants and security forces in this capital city of eastern Nangarhar province Sunday. Following the explosion, several gunmen opened fire and engaged in clashes with the security forces near the government facility. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Nine journalists, including AFP's chief photographer in Kabul Shah Marai, were among 25 people killed in a double suicide blast claimed by IS in the capital on April 30.

Afghanistan has always been suffering from political, social and security instability, primarily due to the hostilities between government troops and the Taliban radical movement, which seeks to establish strict Sharia law in the country.

A public office in eastern Afghanistan came under an armed attack on Sunday, officials said. Fourty-two people were also wounded.

Kabul has become one of the deadliest places in the country for civilians as security forces struggle to keep the militants at bay following the withdrawal of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation combat forces at the end of 2014. Witnesses said the explosions had caused carnage among passers-by.

"I saw two rickshaw drivers on the ground with their arms blown off", said Khan Mohammad, a local resident who saw the initial blasts and the start of the gunbattle.

Violence has escalated across Afghanistan since the announcement of the Taliban's annual spring offensive last month and there have been heightened security fears around preparations for elections in October.
