On Sunday in similar terrorist attacks, a man and his wife and two sons and two daughters were all killed in suicide bombings targeting three Christian churches.

Indonesia has been on high alert for attacks by homegrown militants, including some claimed by ISIS.

Citizens venting their anger over terrorist attacks must also demand accountability from law enforcement and security institutions, including the state intelligence body, Rachland added in his Twitter account on Sunday after suicide bomb attacks on three churches in Surabaya. The country has been relatively quiet in recent years after major cells connected to larger organized groups were stamped out.

Elsewhere family and friends mourned the deaths of the 12 people killed in the church blasts.

As of Monday night, the number of fatalities from a series of bombings in Surabaya and Sidoarjo had risen to 28 people, 13 of whom were suicide bombers or their children.

"A fire exchange has occurred, claiming one life aged between 39 and 41", East Java Police Headquarters Spokesperson Frans Barung Mangera said. Andrie said much information leaked out after the incident, likely inciting others to act.

The use of children in the attacks has been particularly horrifying to people.

"I am trying to ignore broadcast messages on Whatsapp or other social media outlets ordering people to stay away from certain places in the city, because they are spreading fear".

Veteran radicalism analyst Sidney Jones from the Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict, in her report for the Lowy Institute yesterday said ISIS was "a family affair" from the get-go, with the caliphate deliberately encouraging entire families to migrate, or berhijrah, to Syria to fight or contribute to their cause. "Probably the Indonesians don't even know how many are coming back", said Bilveer Singh, a political science professor at the National University of Singapore.

He said the buildup to Indonesia's presidential election next year coupled with growing religious intolerance could spark new violence, especially if Islam is used as a politicizing weapon.

Suicide bombings were condemned by President Joko Widodo who called it "barbaric" and "beyond humanity". In condemning the recent attacks, he vowed to issue an emergency presidential decree if parliament continues to drag its feet.

"Personally, I don't feel afraid. The danger of Indonesia is in the next five to 10 years".
