An explosion at a California medical building on Tuesday - which left one person dead and three others injured - was the result of "an intentional detonation", according to FBI investigators.

Investigators believe the Tuesday blast, which happened in Orange County, may have come from a package, according to the Associated Press.

The explosion was reported before 1:25 p.m. on the first floor of a two-story office building, the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) told CBS Los Angeles.

The sheriff's department is partnering with the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, who will assist the investigation. A female of undisclosed age was killed, and three people were injured in the explosion at a medical building, authorities said.

However, sheriff's Cmdr. Dave Sawyer said the size of the explosion made it suspicious but no explosive device had been found, and it was unclear whether the blast was accidental or intentional.

Mary McWilliams tells the Orange County Register that she arrived for an appointment Tuesday in Aliso Viejo to find smoke surrounding the area and vehicle alarms going off. OCFA said a bomb squad was sent in to assess the situation and investigate the cause of the blast.

Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy said children at a daycare across the street were not injured.

"There's heavy damage on the first floor corner of the building, walls and windows blown out", Capt.

"Take care of my mother, take care of my mother!" shouted one woman as she fled, according to NBC4.

Authorities said they are not actively seeking a suspect.

Bommarito said one of the injured people suffered from smoke inhalation, but the extent of the other victims' injuries was unknown. The other woman was burned and her head was bleeding.

The initial call came in about an hour ago, at which point 10 engines and 70 firefighters were dispatched. They expected a lengthy investigation to determine the cause.
