Film mogul Harvey Weinstein appeared in handcuffs in a NY court on Friday to face charges of rape and other sex crimes against two of the scores of women who have accused him of misconduct, ending his reign as a Hollywood kingpin.

According to the New York Times, the criminal sex charge stems from a complaint filed by Lucia Evans, an aspiring actress, who said Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex on him at his office in 2004.

Harvey Weinstein arriving at a police precinct in New York City's Tribeca neighborhood in Manhattan on Friday.

He stepped out of a black SUV, clutching several books, among them what appeared to be the Rodgers and Hammerstein biography "Something Wonderful" and a book on director Elia Kazan, and looked glum as he walked up the steps into the station.

He was arraigned later that morning, and was charged with rape in the first degree for two alleged incidences involving two different women in 2013 and 2014. "The arrest and ensuing charges are the result of a joint investigation between the NYPD and the Manhattan District Attorney's Office", the statement continues.

The 66-year-old former studio boss surrendered to police shortly before 7:30 a.m. (1130 GMT) wearing a white shirt, pale blue sweater and dark blazer before a mob of television cameras and photographers.

Once one of the most powerful men in the film industry, Weinstein had always been rumored to have engaged in sexual misconduct - but it was not until reports in The New York Times and The New Yorker surfaced decades' worth of sexual assault and harassment allegations that the producer experienced his precipitate fall from grace last autumn.

"Today Harvey Weinstein will take his first step on his inevitable descent to hell", wrote accuser Asia Argento.

Brafman said in a May court filing that federal prosecutors in NY had opened a separate criminal investigation into the allegations.

Some of Weinstein's victims were speaking out today, with Rose McGowan appearing on Good Morning America today, revealing that she felt "shocked" and admitting that, "I didn't think I would see the day that he would have handcuffs on him. We urge additional survivors and others with relevant information to call our Sex Crimes Hotline at 212-335-9373", District Attorney Cy Vance said.

"That was the culture then", said Weinstein.

Weinstein's rep released a statement following the publication of the New Yorker expose, denying the accusations against him.

"Hopefully that will actually heal a lot of the kind of trauma I get whenever I see his face or whenever I hear his name or whenever I have to read or hear that he says it was consensual."
He has been charged with rape and a criminal sex act - both felonies.

In the Strauss-Kahn case, Brafman said at the time he planned to argue that the woman must be lying because she was much larger than the accused. Over the years, journalists and investigators, chasing leads from a whisper network of women and a handful of complainants, tried to expose the accusations and hold him accountable, but came up empty.

Harvey Weinstein's choice of reading material for his surrender to NY authorities on Friday drew attention to a pair of entertainment biographies.

Weinstein has repeatedly denied any instance of nonconsensual sex, though this is the first time formal charges have been handed down.

But Belloni said it was "notoriously difficult" to get a conviction in sexual assault cases, and it may depend on how many women will be allowed to tell their story in court.

Other actresses who have publicly accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct include Uma Thurman and Salma Hayek.
