Subtropical Storm Alberto may crash some Memorial Day outings

Heavy rainfall and tropical storm conditions will likely reach the northern Gulf Coast well before the arrival of the center of Alberto.

Along the coast three to six inches of rain are expected.

Flood and flash-flood watches are spread across Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, where 4 to 7 inches (10 to 18 centimeters) of rain could fall through early next week and reach into South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee expected to be hit by Alberto's remnants, the National Weather Service said.

Much of the storm's most-intense showers stayed far offshore to the east, in the Atlantic Ocean, or south of Central Florida while the storm's center moved northward in the Gulf of Mexico. Boating conditions will continue to be unsafe, however. A Flash Flood Watch is also in effect for the entire Florida Panhandle - including all inland areas - through Monday night.

The first named Atlantic storm of 2018 is expected to intensify and bring wind speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour to the Gulf Coast when it approaches over the holiday on Monday, he said. By Monday night, it might be a little bit drier, with the chance of rain dropping to 60 percent, according to the National Weather Service in Miami.

A more widespread area of rain and embedded storms will arrive early Tuesday and last all day before Alberto moves north of Alabama by Wednesday. The risk for rip currents will also remain high at area beaches for several days, and water enthusiasts are encouraged to use caution or check with local authorities before entering the water.

We're all waking up to the impacts of Alberto: dreary rain, gusty wind, the reluctant change of Memorial Day plans.

Tropical storm warnings are in effect from the Mississippi/Alabama border all the way through to Bonita Beach, Florida.

The NHC said Alberto had maximum sustained winds of near 65 miles per hour with higher gusts and that little change in strength is expected before the storm makes landfall on the northern Gulf Coast later Monday. Due to recent rains, grounds over much of the area are saturated and heavy rain could cause localized flooding issues.

Heavy downpours were expected to begin lashing parts of Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama on Sunday. And just as Memorial Day marked summer's unofficial start in the U.S., Alberto gave it the unofficial start of what forecasters recently predicted would be an active hurricane season.

Watch Spectrum News for a look at your area's latest forecast. Essentially, the characteristics of a subtropical system mean it lacks the punch to quickly increase in strength and become a hurricane.

Between Hurricane Harvey in Texas, Irma in the Caribbean and southeastern USA and Maria in Puerto Rico, previous year was one of the most active hurricane seasons on record, said The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

National Hurricane Center forecasters said that as of 11 a.m., the storm was about 130 miles (210 kilometers) southwest of Tampa.
