'Solo: A Star Wars Story' struggles to take off in opening weekend

Even though Solo enjoyed a relatively positive critical reception, however, the film is facing a bit of a challenge when it comes to its box office earnings. Yet one of its most lucrative franchises is still a flop in the world's second-biggest cinema market.

Disney and Lucasfilm's "Star Wars" prequel is now looking to make $101 million in North America during its four-day holiday weekend debut. The Last Jedi was in theaters only five months ago, and two Star Wars films in one year could be considered overkill.

"Avengers: Infinity War" was in third place with $21.2 million in its fifth week, bringing its total domestic gross to more than $626 million.

The Han Solo origin film began its worldwide run with a dismal $65 million this weekend.

Solo also had less-than-stellar reviews and faced scepticism from Star Wars fanatics, some of whom had a meltdown over creative decisions made on The Last Jedi.

"Solo" represents the lowest opening for a "Star Wars" film since Disney took over the franchise starting with 2015's "The Force Awakens". "Maybe it's cultural differences or something; in general it doesn't suit my taste". It came in way under projections, opening with $84.7 million over three days, and just $148 million globally. The latest Johnny Knoxville comedy, Action Point, will be released by Paramount in 2,000 theaters next weekend, and Upgrade with Logan Marshall-Green is also set to enter theaters on June 1st. According to the BBC, experts predicted the movie would take $130m (£97.6m) and $150m (£112.7m) in its first weekend. In five weeks, its domestic tally has topped $626 million, while globally it has made $1.9 billion.

Given Solo's numerous struggles, Star Wars faithfuls were understandably concerned about the quality of the movie. Based on the "Star Wars" legendary character Han Solo, it's the second of the "Star Wars" anthology films following "Rogue One".

Alden Ehrenreich in a still from Solo: A Star Wars Story. Its four-day holiday weekend estimate looks to hit $20 million. This gives the remake of the 1987 comedy a four-week total of $41.5 million which is, sadly, nearly twice as much as the original made when it was first released. Meanwhile, the year-to-date box office is up 7.6%.
