Meanwhile, The Associated Press reports that a senior police official says at least one of the explosions was a vehicle bomb.

On Wednesday, Task Force Southwest announced U.S. Forces-Afghanistan conducted a series of strikes on the Taliban over a 10-day period that resulted in the deaths of more than 70 senior Taliban leaders.

In eastern Logar province, suicide bombers attacked a police station in the morning, killing at least three police officers, including the station's commander and the deputy director of traffic police for the provincial capital, Pul-e Alam, local media reported.

In the southern city of Kandahar, a roadside bomb killed three people and wounded another 13, said Daud Ahmadi, spokesman for the Kandahar provincial governor. No one immediately claimed the attack.

Security personnel arrive at the site of an attack in the Afghan Interior Ministry in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Wednesday.

The U.S. military said the May 24 meeting involved commanders from different Afghan provinces, including neighboring Farah, where Taliban fighters briefly threatened to overrun the provincial capital this month.

"Violence and progress can coexist, and that's what we're seeing", he said.

Twelve other people, including four police officers and eight civilians, were wounded in the attack, said provincial police chief Mohmmad Abdali.

"This was a civilian residential area, which had no connection with the Taliban", spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said in a statement.

But Nicholson, who has sought to drive the Taliban to the negotiating table by bringing to bear increased United States military pressure, maintained that violence and progress can coexist. The Taliban has stepped up the fighting despite a surge of USA military activity as part of Washington's new war strategy set in motion last summer.

In the past, the Taliban have mostly refused to talk to the Afghan government, a longstanding USA demand. He said some Taliban figures and leaders have publicly expressed interest in reconciliation despite recent attacks on government facilities.

Gen. Miller's extensive operational and command experience in Afghanistan, going back to when the Army Special Forces officer led the Obama-era Afghanistan-Pakistan Coordination Cell at the Pentagon in 2009, makes the special operations veteran a good fit to usher in the Trump era of the longest war in US history, some defense analysts say.
