Pixel 3 Devices to Be Completely Built In-House by Google

The Pixel 3 XL will have a "nearly edge-to-edge screen" and a chin at the bottom which doesn't come as surprising for two reasons.

Going by the leaked images at the moment, what is evident right away is a mixed approach from Google in that the bigger Pixel 3 XL will have a notched display while the smaller Pixel handset will have a more conventional layout. Overall, despite generally strong reviews, sales of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL have not been good.

Google's updated flagship Pixel phone will be launched this fall, according to a report.

Google a year ago shipped less than 4 million units, compared with 216 million iPhones shipped in the same period, International Data Corp statistics showed.

The phones are claimed to be the first phones Google has not relied on existing phone makers for, with the design and hardware specs exclusively designed in-house and the manufacturing outsourced to Foxconn. For the third year in a row, Verizon will be the exclusive US carrier partner for the new Pixels. According to documents obtained by WinFuture, FIH Mobile (a subsidiary of Foxconn) has struck a deal with Google to manufacture upcoming Pixel flagships. HTC has long worked to match Apple as a design-led phone brand, and Google acquired parts of HTC Corp back in January. The smaller Pixel 3 smartphone will sport an older design with wide bezels above and below the screen, while the larger Pixel 3 XL will have narrower bezels up top that copy the iPhone X's notch. They claim that Google aims to eventually remove the bezels completely in a future Pixel but is retaining the notch and chin this year to keep stereo speakers on the front of the phone, the people said.

There is also a possibility that an under-screen fingerprint reader will be introduced on one of the phones, although this tech is allegedly still struggling in development. Google expected to follow the same tradition this year also. Recently, we have seen the front tempered glass protectors for the new Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL devices leak out and float around on the internet. At the back, both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will house a single camera setup, with an upgraded configuration compared to past year.

The report goes on to say that Google won't be adopting a dual rear camera setup on either one of the Pixel smartphones this year.

The Pixel 3 XL would come with a notch as an initiative of Google in making the new Android P more compatible with the display cutouts.
