Greitens computer tampering case will be dismissed

Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens to resign following months of scandal Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens speaks in Palmyra Mo. Jan. 29 2018

Missouri's embattled Republican governor suddenly resigned Tuesday afternoon, saying that while he did nothing wrong, he could not allow "the forces opposed to us" to damage his family. "I can't allow those forces to cause pain and difficulty to the people that I love". A special prosecutor assigned to the case said on Tuesday that her investigation will continue, according to local media.

At his house, she testified that Greitens told her he thought she hadn't "been treated good in so long" and wanted her to exercise.

He didn't take any questions from reporters after his brief statement.

Greitens repeated his claims of innocence during Tuesday's news conference and touted his accomplishments as governor. He was facing possible impeachment. The charge says the incident occurred in April 2015. During this time, he was also "pull [ing] down [her] trousers", but she did not give consent, she said. The report also indicates that Greitens' campaign later lied in campaign finance reports about how it got the list.

St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner, a Democrat who had led the now-scuttled felony invasion-of-privacy case against the governor, said her office had reached a "fair and just resolution" with Greitens' attorneys. Gardner said the charge could be refiled.

The announcement came a few hours after a state judge ruled that Greitens' dark-money group, A New Missouri, had to turn over internal communications and documents to a Missouri House committee that has been investigating the governor's conduct. Authorities haven't released her name.

His support in the Capitol began to unravel after the night of January 10, when a St. Louis TV station aired a report featuring an audio recording secretly made by a woman's ex-husband.

Greitens said the allegations amounted to a "political witch hunt" and vowed to stay in office. Greitens had been charged with invasion of privacy after being accused of taking a partially nude photograph of the woman and threatening to release it if she spoke about their relationship. Greitens has admitted to having an affair but denied any criminal wrongdoing. That charge was dismissed in the city of St. Louis on May 14, but prosecutors in Kansas City are reportedly looking into similar charges.

For those fellow Republicans who had strenuously urged his resignation, Greitens' exit provides the divided party a chance to reunify at the start of a summer campaign season that will include intense efforts to unseat Democratic U.S. Sen. Hawley turned his evidence over to St. Louis prosecutors.

Though Greitens had apparently made a decision to resign days earlier, he began the week as though he would continue his fight. We want to thank the members of the Special Investigative Committee on Oversight for the serious and professional manner in which they went about their task. Greitens' use of a secretive app that deletes messages after they're read also sparked a review by Hawley.
