Summit with N. Korea is back on for June 12

Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, On Rare Visit To North Korea, Invites Kim To Russia

Earlier, President Trump said talks between Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol had been going well, and that he hoped to hold a summit with Kim Jong Un in Singapore on the originally scheduled date of June 12.

Their job, Pompeo said, was putting Trump and Kim "in a place where we think there could be real progress made by the two of them meeting".

Disputes between Washington and Pyongyang led Trump to cancel the June 12 meeting on May 24 - only to see a flurry of diplomatic efforts surrounding the proposed summit in recent days.

Speaking after the Oval Office meeting, the president said he looks forward to the day when he can "take the sanctions off" North Korea.

The envoy's visit, the first by a top North Korean official in 18 years, came after two days of meetings with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in NY to lay further groundwork for the summit.

After the meeting in the Oval Office, Trump walked Kim and his delegation to their vehicle, an honor usually reserved for a select few foreign dignitaries. Kim is likely to receive a proposal that he would have to refuse on June 12, which would prompt a reaction from Washington, Glazebrook added.

What did Trump say today?

Pompeo said that after a series of meetings he believes the talks are going in "the right direction".

North Korea is estimated to have more than a dozen nuclear weapons.

"Looking forward to meeting with Kim Yong Chol in NY to discuss @Potus potential summit with Chairman Kim", Pompeo tweeted, using the shorthand for president of the United States. This was the first time that a senior North Korean official had visited the White House since a senior military official from that country visited former-President Bill Clinton in 2000. The media said you had a meeting and cancelled it.

Trump said the letter from Kim, hand-delivered by Kim Yong Chol, was "very nice" and "very interesting" - but then said he had not opened it yet.

The letter from Kim Jong Un had to first be inspected by United States officials before it was delivered to the president, a White House official confirmed.

Trump and Kim spent more than an hour in the Oval Office on Friday discussing issues in the run-up to a June 12 summit in Singapore between Trump and Kim Jong Un.

One day prior, South Korean President Moon Jae In ― who was reportedly blindsided by Trump's decision to pull out of the summit ― traveled to the DMZ for an impromptu meeting with Kim Jong Un.

In Pyongyang, Kim said his country's will to see denuclearization on the Korean peninsula remained "unchanged, consistent and fixed", but said he hoped that and improved North Korea-U.S. relations would both be solved on a "stage-by-stage" basis.

The United States has been demanding that North Korea abandon its nuclear weapons program amid reports that it is close to being able to launch a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the United States. "That I can tell you".

This morning, Pompeo said in a tweet that the on-again-off-again summit would bring North Korea "a great opportunity to achieve security and economic prosperity".
